THE SPORT OF KINGS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AT DALLAS BURSTON POLO CLUB
Polo has often been regarded as an elitist sport due in part to being referred to as ‘the sport of Kings’, and fictional depictions of players such as millionaire Tom Buchanan, wife of Daisy in the Great Gatsby, as the norm for polo.
At Dallas Burston Polo Club, the overall aim to make polo accessible to all. We host one large event per month, which combines exhilarating polo with great entertainment, whilst on all other weekends we run regular polo tournaments, during which entry is free and spectators are encouraged to bring picnics. The fast paced nature of the game makes it perfect entertainment for all to enjoy including families and businesses.
Polo is a fantastic sport: The ponies reach speeds of up to 40mph and since it’s high on impact and is full of bumping and barging - riders need good balance, perfect team work and a good bond with their ponies, so it’s a great form of exercise both mentally and physically.
Due to the aggressive nature of the sport, some refer to it as ‘rugby on horse back’, making it more attractive to boys than say dressage; however, girls are fast becoming avid partakers of the sport too. The fact that you can learn to play with limited riding experience means that a large proportion of beginners have never even sat on a horse before. Lessons at DBPC are available, with fantastic instruction covering all aspects of the game and tailored to all levels of players.
Traditionally polo ponies are imported over from South America with Argentina being the biggest exporters, however the growth of the ROR (Retraining of Racehorses) scheme has brought to the forefront a range of trainable horses for half the price, which whilst not making top polo ponies, can be more than suitable for low goal amateur players.
Through the Pony Club, polo has always been accessible to children, but the increasing popularity of SUPA (Schools and Universities Polo Association) has led to more schools and universities taking up the sport where students form self-run clubs broadening the appeal of polo and breaking down the boundaries.
Events such as Polo On The Beach on Watergate bay in Cornwall, and our own DBPC Polo In The Park, have helped the sport’s popularity grow among the public, as they combine spectacular matches with additional generic activities such as fun fairs, shopping, food villages and children’s activities such as face painting and pony rides.
